Our List of Books for Baby

By Brooke Tseng

FREE Elephant Issue! FREE Tiger Poster! As we all know, reading to your baby is a wonderful way to encourage language development and also an excuse (if you really need one) to cuddle and bond with her. As your baby grows and develops physically and mentally, her interest in books will change. As I found out with my own son, a book that captivated him one month would not get so much as a glance the next month. Some books that I found delightful, he never took to at all and some he utterly adores- and still does

Below I will share a handful of books my guy liked at different stages in babyhood. I encourage all you mommies to share you own list, too, at the bottom of this article!

Brooke's list of books for baby:

0-6 months

At this age, simple, high-contrast pictures are usually key to captivating your infant. Their eyesight is still developing and pictures without clutter are easier for them to see and sort out.

  • Cow Moo Me, by Stephen Losordo (Author), Jane Conteh-Morgan (Illustrator)

  • Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr. (Author), Eric Carle (Illustrator)

  • Thomas and the Weather by W. Rev Awdry (Author)

6-12 months:

As older babies begin to explore their world, interactive, tactical books are a wonderful option. Babies love being able to manipulate, touch, and experience their books as you read and point out pictures. Make your reading sessions a full sensory experience for your little explorers.

  • Feely Bugs by David A. Carter (Illustrator)

  • Fisher Price Farm Lift the Flap by Doris Tomaselli (Author)

  • What’s on my Head? by Margaret Miller (Photographer)

12-18 months

Young toddlers are usually becoming more interested in language and some finally appreciate simple, engaging text. Also, as they begin collecting words, they sometimes enjoy pointing out the familiar objects in their books. Books that show everyday situations and real-life objects are perfect for this age.

  • Goodnight Moon- by Margaret Wise Brown (Author), Clement Hurd (Illustrator)

  • Happy Baby Words by Roger Priddy (Author)

  • Mama Mama/Papa Papa by Jean Marzollo (Author), Laura Regan (Illustrator)
